The best way to judge this is to make sure all evidence of feeding has gone within the first five minutes. Feeding fish during the winter season can be dangerous. Their digestive systems slow and almost stop as they enter a type of hybernation. Fish need little to no food during the winter season if the water drops below 55 degrees. For the best results, begin feeding your fish in the spring when the water temperature reaches 55 degrees, and increase feeding to twice daily when they become more active.
